Lenten Hymns
ALL YOU WHO SEEK A COMFORT SURE
VERSE 1
All you who seek a comfort sure
In trouble and distress,
Whatever sorrow vex the mind,
Or guilt the soul oppress.
CHORUS
Jesus, who gave Himself for you
Upon the Cross to die,
Opens to you His Sacred Heart;
Oh, to that heart draw nigh.
VERSE 2
You hear how kindly He invites;
You hear His words so blest:
“All you that labour, come to Me,
And I will give you rest.”
VERSE 3
What meeker than the Saviour’s heart
As on the Cross He lay?
It did His murderers forgive
And for their pardon pray.
BLESSED LAMB!
VERSE 1
Blessed Lamb! On Calvary’s mountain
Slain to take our sins away:
Let the drops of that rich fountain,
Our tremendous ransom pay:
Sacred Saviour! Sacred Saviour!
Lowly at thy feet we pray.
VERSE 2
Blessed Lamb! Vouchsafe us pardon,
In thy love our souls confide:
By thy groans within the garden,
By the death which thou hast died,
Let thy Passion – Let thy Passion,
Evermore with us abide!
VERSE 3
So shall peace, sweet peace be given,
Purchase of thy precious pain;
So shall earth but lead to heaven,
Since for us the Lamb was slain:
Dear Redeemer! Dear Redeemer!
Thou canst not have died in vain.
GLORY BE TO JESUS
VERSE 1
Glory be to Jesus,
Who in bitter pains
Pour’d for me the life-blood
From His sacred veins.
VERSE 2
Grace and life eternal,
In that blood I find,
Blest be His compassion,
Infinitely kind.
VERSE 3
Blest through endless ages,
Be the precious stream,
Which from endless torment,
Doth the world redeem.
VERSE 4
There the fainting spirit,
Drinks of life her fill,
There as in a fountain,
Leaves herself at will.
VERSE 5
Abel’s blood for vengeance,
Pleaded to the skies;
But the blood of Jesus,
For our pardon cries.
VERSE 6
Often as it is sprinkled,
On our guilty hearts,
Satan in confusion,
Terror-struck departs.
VERSE 7
Often as earth exalting,
Wafts its praise on high,
Hell with horror tremble;
Heav’n is fill’d with joy.
VERSE 8
Lift ye, then, your voices;
Swell the mighty flood;
Louder still and louder,
Praise the precious blood
GOD OF MERCY AND COMPASSION
VERSE 1
God of mercy and compassion,
Look with pity upon me;
Father, let me call thee Father,
Tis thy child returns to thee.
CHORUS
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy,
Let me not implore in vain;
All my sins I now detest them,
Never will I sin again.
VERSE 2
By my sins I have deserved,
Death and endless misery;
Hell with all its pains and torments,
And for all eternity.
VERSE 3
By my sins I have abandoned,
Right and claim to heaven above;
Where the saint rejoice forever,
In a boundless sea of love.
VERSE 4
See our Saviour, bleeding, dying,
On the Cross of Calvary;
To that Cross my sins have nailed him,
Yet he bleeds and dies for me
GOD OUR FATHER, FORGIVE OUR SINS
VERSE 1
God our Father, forgive our sins,
For we are very weak,
God our Father, we hope in Thee
Throughout our lives.
CHORUS
Remember the Lord,
The King of earth,
And of the sea,
Of heaven above. (dc)
VERSE 2
Lord, show us thy way,
To do according to thy will.
Lord, show us thy way,
To be ever worth love of thee.
VERSE 3
Christ our Redeemer,
We pray to love, to save thy children;
Christ our Redeemer to be our tongue,
To our heavenly King.
VERSE 4
Let us be righteous in Communion,
As Body of Christ,
Let us be righteous to overcome,
The devil’s work.
VERSE 5
Wash away our sins with thy tongue,
And precious blood,
Wash away our sins,
To save us from the death of hell.
VERSE 6
Mary our Mother pray for us thy children,
On earth,
Mary our Mother,
Give us on earth a Mother’s care
JESUS, MY LORD, BEHOLD AT LENGTH THE DAY
VERSE 1
Jesus, my Lord, behold at length the day,
When I resolve from sin to turn away.
CHORUS
O pardon me, Jesus;
Thy mercy I implore;
I will never more offend thee,
No, never more.
VERSE 2
Since my poor soul thy precious Blood has cost;
Suffer it not to be forever lost.
VERSE 3
Kneeling in tears, behold me at thy feet:
Like Magdalene, forgiveness I entreat
MAN OF SORROWS WRAPT IN GRIEF
VERSE 1
Man of sorrows wrapt in grief,
Bow thine ear to our relief;
Thou for us the path hast trod
Of the dreadful wrath of God;
Thou the cup of fire hast drained
Till its light alone remained.
Lamb of love! We look to thee:
Hear our mournful litany.
VERSE 2
By the garden, fraught with woe,
Whither thou full oft wouldst go;
By thine agony of prayer
In the desolation there;
By the dire and deep distress
Of that mystery fathomless —
Lord, our tears in mercy see:
Hearken to our litany.
VERSE 3
By the chalice brimming o’er
With disgrace and torment sore;
By those lips which fain would pray
That it might but pass away;
By the heart which drank it dry,
Lest a rebel race should die —
Be thy, pity, Lord, our plea:
Hear our solemn litany.
VERSE 4
Man of sorrows! Let thy grief
Purchase for us our relief;
Lord of mercy! Bow thine ear,
Slow to anger, swift to hear;
By the Cross’s royal road
Lead us to the throne of God.
There for aye to sing to thee
Heaven’s triumphant litany
MY GOD I LOVE YOU
VERSE 1
My God, I love you — though there were
No heaven for me to win,
No hell to punish those who dare
Against your love to sin.
VERSE 2
Upon the Cross your wide embrace
Made me, dear Lord, your own;
The nails, the spear, the long disgrace
For me should all atone.
VERSE 3
That night of fear, those hours of pain,
Those bitter griefs of yours,
That death itself was borne, to gain
A sinner’s love ’twas mine.
VERSE 4
And shall the fear of hell below
Or hope of heaven above
Be all the reason heart can know
This loving Lord to love.
VERSE 5
The love that asks not anything,
Love like your own love free,
Jesus I give, who are my king,
Who are my God, to you
NEARER MY GOD TO THEE
VERSE 1
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee,
Even though it be a cross
That raiseth me.
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
VERSE 2
Deep in Thy Sacred Heart
Let me abide:
Thou that hast bled for me,
Sorrowed and died.
Sweet shall my weeping be,
Grief surely leading me
Nearer, my God, to Thee;
Nearer to thee.
VERSE 3
Friends may depart from me,
Night may come down;
Clouds of adversity
Darken and frown;
Still through my tears I’ll see
Hope gently leading me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
O COME AND MOURN WITH ME A WHILE
VERSE 1
O come and mourn with me a while,
See Mary calls us to her side;
O come and let us mourn with her,
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 2
Have we no tears to shed for Him;
While soldiers scoff and Jews deride?
Ah! Look how patiently He hangs;
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 3
How fast His feet and hands are nailed;
His blessed tongue with thirst is tied;
His failing eyes are blind with blood;
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 4
Seven times He spoke, seven words of love,
And all three hours His silence cried
For Mercy on the souls of men;
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 5
O break, O break hard heart of mine;
Thy weak self-love and guilty pride
His Pilate and His Judas were;
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 6
A broken heart, a fount of tears,
Ask and they will not be denied;
A broken heart love’s cradle is;
Jesus, our Love, is crucified.
VERSE 7
O love of God! O sin of man!
In this dread act your strength is tried
And victory remains with love;
Jesus, our Love is crucified
SOLE HOPE OF ALL THE WORLD
VERSE 1
Sole hope of all the world and Lord,
Bestower of the great reward,
Receive the prayers thy servants raise
Mixed with psalms and chants of praise.
VERSE 2
And though our conscience doth proclaim,
Our deep transgressions and our shame,
Cleanse us, O God, we humbly plead,
From sins of thought and word and deed.
VERSE 3
Our sins remember thou no more,
Forgive, thy mercy can restore,
So take upon thee Lord, our care,
That pure in heart we make our prayer.
VERSE 4
Therefore accept, O Lord, this tide
Of fact which thou hast sanctified,
That we may reach by mystic ways,
The sacraments of Paschal days.
VERSE 5
May he who is the threefold Lord
On us confer this high reward,
In whom so long as world abide
One only God is glorified
WHEN I SURVEY
VERSE 1
When I survey the wondrous cross,
On which the prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And poor contempt on all my pride.
VERSE 2
Forbid it Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
VERSE 3
See! From His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
VERSE 4
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so Divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all
