Hymns to Our Lord
BLESSED SAVIOUR
VERSE 1
Blessed Saviour, we adore Thee,
We thy love and grace proclaim,
Thou art might, thou art Holy,
Glorious is thy matchless name.
CHORUS
Glorious, Glorious, Glorious is thy Name,
O Lord,
Glorious, Glorious, Glorious is thy Name,
O Lord.
VERSE 2
Great Redeemer, Lord and Master,
Light of all eternal days,
Let the Saints of every nation,
Sing thy just and endless praise.
VERSE 3
From thy throne of Heaven’s glory,
To the cross of sin and shame,
Thou didst come to die a ransom,
Guilty sinners to reclaim.
VERSE 4
Come, O come immortal Saviour,
Come and take thy royal Throne,
Come and reign and reign forever,
Be the Kingdom all thine own
CHRIST IS KING OF EARTH AND HEAVEN
VERSE 1
Christ is King of earth and heaven;
Let his subjects all proclaim;
In the splendour of His temple,
Honour to His holy name.
VERSE 2
Christ is King! No soul created
Can refuse to bend the knee,
To the God made Man who reigneth,
As ’twas promised from the tree.
VERSE 3
Christ is King! Let humble sorrow
For our past neglect atone,
For the lack of faithful service,
To the Master whom we own.
VERSE 4
Christ is King! Let joy and gladness
Greet Him; let His courts resound,
With the praise of faithful subjects,
To His love in honour bound.
VERSE 5
Christ is King! In health and sickness,
Till we breathe our latest breath,
Till we greet in highest heaven,
Christ the victory over death
CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS
VERSE 1
Crown him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon his throne;
Hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns
All music but its own;
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of him who died for thee,
And hail him as thy matchless King,
Through all eternity.
VERSE 2
Crown him the Virgin’s Son,
The God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won,
Which now his brow adorn;
Fruit of the mystic rose,
As of that rose the stem,
The root, whence mercy ever flows,
The Babe of Bethlehem.
VERSE 3
Crown him the Lord of love;
Behold his hands and side,
Rich wounds yet visible above,
In beauty glorified:
No angel in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye
At mysteries so bright
HAIL, JESUS, HAIL!
VERSE 1
Hail, Jesus, hail! Who for my sake,
Sweet blood from Mary’s veins didst take;
And shed it all for me:
Oh, blessed be my Saviour’s blood,
My light, my life, my only good,
To all eternity.
VERSE 2
To endless ages let us praise,
The precious blood whose price could raise,
The world from wrath and sin;
Whose streams our inward thirst appease,
And heal the sinner’s worst disease,
If he but bathe therein.
VERSE 3
Oh, Sweetest blood, that can implore,
Pardon of God, and heaven restored,
The heaven which sin had lost;
While Abel’s blood for vengeance pleads,
What Jesus shed still intercedes,
For those who wrong him most.
VERSE 4
Oh, to be sprinkled from the wells
Of Christ’s own sacred blood, excels,
Earth’s best and highest bliss;
The ministers of wrath divine,
Hurt not the happy hearts that shine,
With those red drops of his.
VERSE 5
Ah, there is joy amid the Saints,
And hell’s despairing courage faints,
When this sweet song we raise,
Oh, louder then, and louder still,
Earth with one mighty chorus fill,
The precious blood to praise
HAIL, REDEEMER, KING DIVINE
VERSE 1
Hail, Redeemer, King divine
Priest and Lamb, the throne is thine;
King whose reign shall never cease,
Prince of everlasting peace!
CHORUS
Angels saints and nations sing,
“Praise be Jesus Christ, our King
Lord of life, earth, sky and sea;
King of love on Calvary.”
VERSE 2
King, whose name creation thrills,
Rule our minds, our hearts, our wills,
Till in peace each nation rings
With thy praises, King of Kings.
VERSE 3
King most holy, King of truth,
Guide the lowly, guide the youth,
Christ, O King of glory bright,
Be to us eternal light!
VERSE 4
Shepherd-king o’er mountains steep,
Homeward bring your wand’ring sheep;
Shelter in one royal fold,
States and Kingdoms new and old
I SURRENDER ALL
VERSE 1
All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
CHORUS
I surrender all, I surrender all.
All to Thee, my blessed Saviour,
I surrender all.
VERSE 2
All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me Jesus, take me now.
VERSE 3
All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
VERSE 4
All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
O the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory to His Name!
JESUS ETERNAL TRUTH SUBLIME
VERSE 1
Jesus eternal truth sublime,
Through endless years the same,
Thou crown of those who through all time,
Confess Thy holy name.
VERSE 2
Thy suppliant people through the prayers,
Of thy blessed saints forgive,
For his dear sake thy wrath forbear,
And bid our spirit live.
VERSE 3
Again returns the sacred day,
With heavenly glory bright,
Who saw Him go upon his way,
Into the beams of light
JESUS FOR ME
VERSE 1
Jesus my Saviour is all things to me,
Oh what a wonderful Saviour is He,
Guiding protection o’er life troubled sea,
Mighty deliverer Jesus for me.
CHORUS
Jesus for me, Jesus for me,
All the time everywhere, Jesus for me.
VERSE 2
Jesus in sickness, and Jesus in health,
Jesus in poverty, comfort or wealth,
Sunshine or tempest, whatever it be,
He is my safety, Jesus for me.
VERSE 3
He is my refuge, my rock and my tower,
He is my treasure, my strength and my power,
Life everlasting, my daysman is he,
Blessed Redeemer, Jesus for me
JESUS, GENTLEST SAVIOUR
VERSE 1
Jesus, gentlest Saviour,
God of might and power,
Thou thyself art dwelling
In us at this hour.
VERSE 2
Nature cannot hold thee,
Heaven is all too straight,
For thine endless glory,
And thy royal state.
VERSE 3
Yet the hearts of children,
Hold what worlds cannot
And the God of wonders,
Loves the lowly spot.
VERSE 4
Jesus, gentlest Saviour,
Thou art in us now;
Fill us full of goodness,
Till our hearts o’erflow.
VERSE 5
Pray the prayer within us,
That to heaven shall rise;
Sing the song that angels
Sing above the skies.
VERSE 6
Multiply our graces,
Chiefly love and fear,
And dear Lord, the chiefest,
Grace to persevere
SWEET HEART OF JESUS
VERSE 1
Sweet Heart of Jesus,
Fount of love and mercy,
Today we come
Thy blessing to implore;
Oh touch our hearts,
So cold and so ungrateful,
And make them, Lord,
Thine own for evermore.
CHORUS
Sweet heart of Jesus we implore,
Oh, make us love Thee more and more.
VERSE 2
Sweet Heart of Jesus,
Make us pure and Gentle
And teach us how
To do Thy blessed will,
To follow close
The print of Thy dear footsteps,
And when we fall,
Sweet Heart, oh love us still.
VERSE 3
Sweet Heart of Jesus,
Bless all hearts that love Thee,
And may Thine own Heart
Ever blessed be.
Bless us, dear Lord,
And bless the friends we cherish,
And keep us true
To Mary and to Thee.
KING OF GLORY, KING OF PEACE
VERSE 1
King of glory, King of peace, I will love you,
And that love may never cease, I will love you,
Thou hast granted my request,
Thou hast heard me.
Thou didst note my working breast,
Thou hast spared me.
VERSE 2
Wherefore with my utmost art, I will sing you,
And the dream of all my heart, I will sing you,
Though my sins against me cried,
Thou didst clear me,
And alone when they replied,
You did hear me.
VERSE 3
Seven whole days, not one in seven
I will praise you,
In my heart though not in heaven,
I can praise you,
Small it is in this poor sort, to enclose you,
Even eternity’s too short to extol you
O JESUS CHRIST, REMEMBER
VERSE 1
O Jesus Christ, remember,
When you will come again,
Upon the clouds of heaven,
With all your shining train;
When every eye shall see you in deity reveal’d,
Who now upon this altar
In silence are concealed.
VERSE 2
Remember then, O Saviour, I supplicate of you,
That here I bow’d before you
Upon my bended knee,
That here I owned your presence,
And did not you deny,
And glorified your greatness
Though hid from human eye.
VERSE 3
Accept, divine Redeemer,
The homage of my praise;
O be the light and honour and glory
Of my days,
O be my consolation when death
Is drawing nigh,
O be my only treasure through all eternity
O SACRED HEART
VERSE 1
O Sacred heart,
Our home lies deep in thee;
On earth thou art an exile’s rest,
In heaven the glory of the blest, O Sacred Heart.
VERSE 2
O Sacred Heart,
Thou fount of contrite tears;
Wherever those living waters flow,
New life to sinners, they bestow,
O Sacred Heart.
VERSE 3
O Sacred Heart,
Bless our dear native land;
May our Lord’s sons in truth e’er stand,
With faith’s bright banner still in hand,
O Sacred Heart.
VERSE 4
O Sacred Heart,
Our trust is all in thee;
For though earth’s night be dark and drear,
Thou breathest rest where thou art near,
O Sacred Heart.
VERSE 5
O Sacred Heart,
When shades of death shall fall,
Receive us ’neath thy gentle care,
And save us from the tempter’s snare,
O Sacred Heart.
VERSE 6
O Sacred Heart,
Lead exiled children home,
Where we may ever rest near thee,
In peace and joy eternally,
O Sacred Heart
JESUS, MY LORD, MY GOD, MY ALL
VERSE 1
Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all,
How can l love you as l ought?
And how revere this wondrous gift,
So far surpassing hope or thought?
CHORUS
Sweet Sacrament, You we adore;
Oh, make us love you more and more.
VERSE 2
Had l but Mary’s sinless heart,
To love you with, my dearest King,
Oh, with what bursts of fervent praise,
Your goodness, Jesus would l sing!
VERSE 3
Ah see! Within a creature’s hand,
The vast Creator deigns to be,
Reposing infant-like, as though,
On Joseph’s arm, or Mary’s knee.
VERSE 4
Your body, soul and Godhead, all,
O mystery of love divine!
I cannot compass all l have,
For all you have and are, are mine.
VERSE 5
Sound, sound His praises higher still,
And come, ye angels, to our aid;
’Tis God, ’tis God, the very God;
Whose power man and angels made
JESUS IS GOD!
VERSE 1
Jesus is God! The solid earth,
The ocean broad and bright,
The countless stars, the golden dust,
That strew the skies at night,
The wheeling storm, the dreadful fire,
The pleasant wholesome air,
The summer’s sun, the winter’s frost,
His own creations were.
VERSE 2
Jesus is God! The glorious bands
Of golden angels sing,
Songs of adoring praise to Him,
Their Maker and their King.
He was true God in Bethlehem’s crib,
On Calvary’s Cross true God,
He who in heaven eternal reigned,
In time on earth abode.
VERSE 3
Jesus is God! Let sorrow come
And pain, and every ill;
All are worthwhile for all are means,
His glory to fulfill;
Worthwhile a thousand years of life,
To speak one little word,
If by our credo we might own,
The Godhead of our Lord
TO CHRIST, THE PRINCE OF PEACE
VERSE 1
To Christ, the prince of Peace,
And Son of God most high,
The Father of the world to come
Sing we with holy joy.
VERSE 2
Deep in his heart for us
The wound of love he bore;
That love wherewith he still inflames
The hearts that him adore.
VERSE 3
O Jesus victim blest,
What else but love divine
Could these constrain to open thus
That sacred heart of thine?
VERSE 4
O fount of endless life,
O spring of water clear,
O flame celestial, cleansing all
Who unto thee draw near!
VERSE 5
Hide us in thy dear heart,
For thither do we fly;
There seek thy grace through life,
In death Thine immortality.
VERSE 6
Praise to the Father be,
And sole-begotten Son;
Praise, holy Paraclete, to thee
While endless ages run.
TO JESUS’ HEART
VERSE 1
To Jesus’ heart, all burning
With fervent love for all,
My heart with fondest yearning
Shall raise its joyful strain.
CHORUS
While ages course along,
Blest be with loudest song,
The Sacred Heart of Jesus,
By every heart and tongue.
VERSE 2
O Heart, for me on fire
With love no man can speak,
My yet untold desire
God gives me for thy sake.
VERSE 3
Too true, I have forsaken
Thy love for wilful sin;
Yet now let me be taken
Back by thy grace again.
VERSE 4
As thou art meek and lowly,
And ever pure of heart,
So may my heart be wholly
Of thine the counterpart.
VERSE 5
When life away is flying,
And earth’s false glare is done;
Still, Sacred Heart, in dying
I’ll say I’m all thine own
TO THEE, O HEART OF JESUS
VERSE 1
To thee, O Heart of Jesus,
To Thee our hearts we give,
Help, help us all to love Thee,
And serve Thee while we live.
CHORUS
Yes, yes till life is o’er,
And then for evermore,
O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
We’ll love Thee and adore.
VERSE 2
No heart can be so tender,
No heart can love like Thee:
Thy life’s blood all, O Jesus,
Was shed to set us free.
WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
VERSE 1
What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear –
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
VERSE 2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness –
Take it to the Lord in Prayer!
VERSE 3
Are we weak and heavy-laden?
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge –
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He’ll take and shield you
You will find a solace there.
