Easter Hymns

AT THE LAMB’S HIGH FEAST WE SING

VERSE 1

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing,

Praise to our victorious King,

Who hath washed us in the tide,

Flowing from his pierced side,

Praise we him whose love divine,

Gives the guest his blood for wine,

Gives his body for the feast,

Love the victim, love the priest.

VERSE 2

Where the Paschal blood is poured,

Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword;

Israel’s hosts triumphant go,

Through the wave that drowns the foe,

Christ, the Lamb whose blood was shed,

Paschal victim, Paschal bread,

With sincerity and love,

Eat we manna from above.

VERSE 3

Mighty Victim from thy sky,

Powers of hell beneath thee lie;

Death is conquered in the fight;

Thou halt brought us life and light;

Now thy banner thou dost wave;

Vanquished Satan and the grave;

Angels join his praise to tell —

See o’erthrown the prince of hell.

VERSE 4

Paschal triumpth, Paschal joy,

Only sin can this destroy;

From the death of sin set free,

Souls re-born, dear Lord, in thee;

Hymns of glory, songs of praise,

Father, unto thee we raise;

Risen Lord, all praise to thee,

Ever with the Spirit be.

CHRIST AROSE

VERSE 1

Low in the grave He lay,

Jesus my Saviour!

Waiting the coming day,

Jesus my Lord!

CHORUS

Up from the grave He arose,

With a mighty triumph o’er His foes;

He arose a victor from the dark domain,

And He lives forever with His Saints to reign

He arose! He arose!

Alleluia! Christ arose!

VERSE 2

Vainly they watch His bed,

Jesus my Saviour!

Vainly they seal! The dead,

Jesus my Lord!

VERSE 3

Death cannot keep his prey,

Jesus my Saviour!

He tore the bars away,

Jesus my Lord!

HAIL THIS JOYFUL DAY’S RETURN

VERSE 1

Hail this joyful day’s return,

Hail the pentecostal morn,

Morn when our ascended Head,

On His Church His Spirit shed!

Like the golden tongues of flame,

On the twelve the Spirit came –

Tongues, that earth may hear their call,

Fire that love may burn in all.

VERSE 2

Hear the speech before unknown,

Trembling crowds the wonder own,

What though hardened some abide,

And the Holy work deride?

Mystic hour, when Easter’s sun,

Seven times seven its course hath run;

Church of Christ from debt made free,

Hail thy day of jubilee.

VERSE 3

Lord, to thee thy people bend;

Unto us thy Spirit send;

Blessings of this sacred day,

Grant us, dearest Lord we pray,

Thou who didst our fathers guide,

With their children still abide;

Grant us pardon, grant us peace,

Till our earthly wandering cease.

HOLY SPIRIT LORD OF LIGHT (VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS)

VERSE 1

Holy Spirit, Lord of light,

From the clear celestial heights,

Thy pure beaming radiance give.

Come, thou Father of the poor,

Come with treasures which endure,

Come, thou light of all that live!

VERSE 2

Thou, of all consolers best,

Thou, the soul’s delightful guest,

Dost refreshing peace bestow.

Thou in toll art comfort sweet,

Pleasant coolness in the heat,

Solace in the midst of woe.

Visit thou these hearts of thine,

And our inmost being fill.

If thou take thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay,

All his good is turned to ill.

VERSE 4

Heal our wounds, our strength renew,

On our dryness pour thy dew,

Wash the stains of guilt away.

Bend the stubborn heart and will,

Melt the frozen, warm the chill,

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on us who evermore

Thee confess and thee adore,

With thy sevenfold gifts descend;

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with thee on high;

Give them joys that never end

The apostles stood gazing, his mother around,

With hearts that beat faster,

The bright angels said;

Those high habitations he leaves not again,

Till judging nations, on earth he shall reign.

Where legions defend

Heaven’s glittering gateway.

Their Lord they attend,

And cry, looking thither, you portals let down

For him who rides hither, in peace and renown

The world, sin, death and hell o‘erthrew,

And Jesus is the conqueror’s name,

There his triumphal chariot waits

And angels chant the solemn lay,

Where you will,

Blow, blow, blow, till I be but the breath

Of the Spirit blowing in me.

Blow, blow, blow, till I be but the breath

Of the Spirit blowing in me.

VERSE 1

Today He’s risen, death no more

Shall bind him to the grave,

No more can hell or sin’s foul pow’r

Nor dread your terrors more.

I know that my Redeemer lives,

And reigns above the skies,

He will revive my dust again,

And bid my body rise,

Then clothed in my own glorious flesh,

I shall behold His face,

That sweet hope in my bosom glows,

And cheers my ling’ring days
