General Hymns

ABIDE WITH ME

VERSE 1

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide:

The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide;

When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

VERSE 2

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;

Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;

Change and decay in all around I see;

O thou who changest not, abide with me.

VERSE 3

I need thy presence every passing hour;

What but thy grace can fool the tempter’s power?

Who like thyself my guide and stay can be?

Through cold and sunshine, Lord,

Abide with me.

VERSE 4

I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless;

Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness,

Where is death’s sting? Where grave thy victory?

I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

VERSE 5

Hold thou thy Cross before my closing eyes;

Shine through the gloom and point me

To the skies;

Heaven’s morning breaks,

And earth’s vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord abide with me

ARISE AND SHINE

Arise and shine for the Lord is coming,

Arise and shine for the Lord is coming,

Arise and shine for the Lord is coming,

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!

The Lord is coming.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!

The Lord is coming.

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND

VERSE 1

How many roads must a man walk down,

Before he’s called a man,

How many seas must a white dove sail,

Before he sleeps in the sand,

How many times must the canon balls fly,

Before they’re forever banned.

CHORUS

The answer my friend,

Is blowin’ in the wind,

The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

VERSE 2

How many years can a mountain exist,

Before it’s washed in the sea,

How many years can some people exist,

Before they’re allowed to be free,

How many times can a man turn his head,

And pretend he just doesn’t see.

VERSE 3

How many times must a man look up,

Before he can see the sky,

How many ears must one have,

Before he can hear people cry,

How many deaths will it take till he knows

That too many people have died.

CHILDREN IN THY PRESENCE MET

VERSE 1

Children in thy presence met,

Fill our hearts with holy fear,

Father, be compassionate,

God of mercy, hear.

VERSE 2

Though we do not yet by sight,

God most high, behold thy face,

Pour into our minds the light

Of thy saving grace.

Mighty one, tremendous Lord,

Unto all the ages’ end

Be thy name adored.

To the uncreated Son,

Blessed Spirit, praise to thee,

God for ever One

COME DOWN, LORD

VERSE 1

Come down Lord, my son is ill,

Wracked with fever the livelong day

He is life to me, if you will,

Drive death away, drive death away,

Lord, do not come to my house, I’m unworthy,

Speak and the promise is sealed,

For when Your Word, O God, is spoken,

He shall be healed, he shall be healed.

VERSE 2

Come down, Lord, my soul is ill,

Wracked with anguish the livelong day,

All my sorrowing will be still,

If You but say, if You but say,

Lord, do not come to my house, I’m unworthy,

Speak and the promise is sealed,

For when Your Word, O God, is spoken,

I shall be healed, I shall be healed.

VERSE 3

Come down, Lord the world is ill,

Wracked with bloodshed the livelong day,

Man must struggle for peace until

You show the way, You show the way,

Lord, do not come to our house, we’re unworthy,

Speak and the promise is sealed,

For when Your Word, O God, is spoken,

We shall be healed, we shall be healed

DEAR ANGEL, EVER AT MY SIDE

VERSE 1

Dear angel, ever at my side,

How loving must thou be,

To leave thy home in heaven to guard

A sinful child like me!

VERSE 2

For I have felt thee in my thoughts

Fighting with sin for me;

And when my heart loves God,

I know the sweetness is from thee.

VERSE 3

And when, dear spirit, I kneel down

Morning and night to prayer,

Something there is within my heart

Which tells me thou art there.

VERSE 4

Yet! When I pray thou prayest too,

Thy prayer is all for me;

But when I sleep thou sleepest not,

But watchest patiently.

VERSE 5

Then, for thy sake

More humble will I be;

But I am weak, and when I fall,

O weary not of me

FADE, FADE, EACH EARTHLY JOY

VERSE 1

Fade, fade, each earthly joy, Jesus is mine!

Break every tender tie, Jesus is mine!

Dark is the wilderness,

Earth has no resting place,

Jesus alone can bless, Jesus is mine!

VERSE 2

Tempt not my soul away, Jesus is mine!

Here would I ever stay, Jesus is mine!

Perishing things of clay,

Born but for one brief day,

Pass from my heart away! Jesu is mine!

VERSE 3

Farewell, ye dreams of night, Jesus is mine!

Lost in this dawning Light, Jesus is mine!

All that my soul has tried,

Left but a dismal void,

Jesus has satisfied, Jesus is mine!

VERSE 4

Farewell, mortality, Jesus is mine!

Welcome, eternity! Jesus is mine,

Welcome, O loved and blest,

Welcome, sweet scenes of rest,

Welcome, my saviour bless, Jesus is mine!

FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

VERSE 1

Faith of our fathers, living still,

In spite of dungeon, fire and sword:

Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy,

Whene’er we hear that glorious word!

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith!

We will be true to thee till death.

VERSE 2

Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,

Were still in heart and conscience free.

How sweet would be their children’s fate

If they, like them, could die for thee!

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith!

We will be true to thee till death.

VERSE 3

Faith of our fathers, we will strive,

To win all Nations unto thee;

And through the truth that comes from God,

Mankind shall then be truly free.

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith!

We will be true to thee till death.

VERSE 4

Faith of our fathers, we will love

Both friend and foe in all our strife,

And preach thee too, as love knows how,

By kindly words and virtuous life.

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith!

We will be true to thee till death

FIRMLY I BELIEVE

VERSE 1

Firmly I believe and truly,

God is Three, and God is One,

And I next acknowledge duly,

Manhood taken by the Son.

VERSE 2

And I trust and hope most fully,

In that manhood crucified;

And each thought and deed unruly,

Do to death, as he has died.

VERSE 3

Simply to his grace and wholly,

Light and life and strength belong,

And I love supremely, solely,

Him the holy, him the strong.

VERSE 4

And I hold in veneration,

For the love of him alone Holy Church,

As his creation,

And her teachings, as his own.

VERSE 5

Adoration aye be given,

With and through the angelic host,

To the God of earth and heaven,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

FROM EVERY STORMY WIND

VERSE 1

From every stormy wind that blows,

From every swelling tide of woes,

There is a calm, a sure retreat;

’Tis found beneath the mercy-seat.

VERSE 2

There is a place where Jesus sheds

The oil of gladness on our heads —

A place than all beside more sweet;

It is the blood-stained mercy-seat.

VERSE 3

There is a scene where spirits blend,

Where friends hold fellowship with friends,

Though sundered far, by faith they meet,

Around one common mercy-seat.

VERSE 4

There, there, on eagle wings we soar,

And sense and sin molest no more;

And heaven comes down our souls to greet,

And glory crowns the mercy-seat.

VERSE 5

Oh, let my hand be cold, and still,

My tongue be silent, cold and still,

This pounding heart forget to beat,

If I forget the mercy-seat

FULL IN THE PANTING HEART OF ROME

VERSE 1

Full in the panting heart of Rome,

Beneath the apostle’s crowning dome,

From pilgrims’ lips that kiss the ground,

Breathes in all tongues one only sound:

“God bless our Pope, the great, the good.”

VERSE 2

The golden roof, the marble walls,

The Vatican’s majestic halls,

The note redouble, till it fills

With echoes sweet the seven hills:

VERSE 3

Then surging through each hallowed gate,

Where martyrs glory, in peace, await;

It sweeps beyond the solemn plain,

Peals over Alps, across the main:

VERSE 4

From torrid south to frozen north,

That wave harmonious stretches forth,

Yet strikes no chord more true to Rome’s

Than rings within our hearts and homes

GOD BE WITH YOU

VERSE 1

God be with you till we meet again!

By His counsels guide, uphold you;

With His sheep securely fold you;

God be with you till we meet again!

CHORUS

Till we meet!… Till meet!

Till we meet at Jesus feet…

Till we meet!… Till we meet!…

God be with you till we meet again!

VERSE 2

God be with you till we meet again!

’Neath His wings securely hide you;

Daily manna still provide you;

God be with you till we meet again!

VERSE 3

God be with you till we meet again!

When life’s perils thick confound you;

Put his loving arms around you;

God be with you till we meet again!

VERSE 4

God be with you till we meet again!

Keep love’s banner floating o’er you;

Smite death’s threatening wave before you;

God be with you till we meet again!

GO TELL EVERYONE

VERSE 1

God’s spirit is in my heart;

He has called me and set me apart,

This is what I have to do,

What I have to do.

CHORUS

He sent me to give the good news to the poor,

Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,

Tell blind people that they can see,

And set the downtrodden free,

And go tell ev’ryone the news that

The Kingdom of God has come,

And go tell ev’ryone

The news that God’s Kingdom has come.

VERSE 2

Just as the Father sent me,

So I’m sending you out to be,

My witness throughout the world,

The whole of the world.

VERSE 3

Don’t carry a load in your pack,

You don’t need two shirts to your back,

A workman can earn his own keep,

Can earn his own keep.

VERSE 4

Don’t worry what you have to say,

Don’t worry because on that day,

God’s Spirit will speak in your heart,

Will speak in your heart

GRANT TO US

CHORUS

Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed;

Recreate in us your own Spirit, Lord!

VERSE 1

Behold the days are coming,

Says the Lord our God,

When I will make a new covenant

With the house of Israel.

VERSE 2

Deep within their being I will implant my law;

I will write it in their hearts.

Never more will I remember their sins

HAIL HOLY JOSEPH

Husband of Mary, hail!

Chaste as the lily flower

In Eden’s peaceful vale.

VERSE 2

Hail, holy Joseph, hail!

Father of Christ esteemed,

Father be thou to those

Thy foster Son redeemed.

VERSE 3

Hail, holy Joseph, hail!

Prince of the house of God,

May his blest grace be

By thy pure hands bestowed.

VERSE 4

Hail, holy Joseph, hail!

Comrade of angels, hail!

Cheer thou the hearts that faint,

And guide the steps that fail.

VERSE 5

Hail, holy Joseph, hail!

God’s Choice wert thou alone;

To thee  the word made flesh

Was subject as a Son.

VERSE 6

Mother of Jesus, bless,

And bless, ye Saints on high,

All meek and simple souls

That to Saint Joseph cry.

HARK! HARK, MY SOUL!

VERSE 1

Hark! Hark, my soul!

Angelic songs are swelling,

O’er earth’s green fields,

And ocean’s wave beat shore;

How sweet the truth those blessed

Strains are telling,

Of that new life when sin shall be no more.

CHORUS

Angels of Jesus, angels of light,

Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night.

VERSE 2

Onward we go, for still we hear them singing,

Come, weary soul, for Jesus bids you come,

And through the dark, its echoes sweetly ringing,

The music of the gospel leads us home.

VERSE 3

Far, faraway, like bell at evening pealing,

The voice of Jesus sounds o’er land and sea,

And laden souls, by thousands meekly stealing

King shepherd, turn their weary steps to thee.

VERSE 4

Rest comes at length,

Though life be long and dreary,

The day must dawn and darksome

Night be past;

All journeys end in welcome to the weary,

And Heaven, the heart’s true home,

Will come at last.

VERSE 5

Angels sing on, your faithful watches keeping,

Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above,

While we toil on, .

And sooth ourselves with weeping.

Till life’s long night shall break in endless love

HARK! HOW THE BANKS OF JORDAN RING

VERSE 1

Hark! How the banks of Jordan ring,

The Baptist’s utterance echoing!

Your drowsy slumbers cast away,

Those warning accents to obey.

VERSE 2

The conscious earth, and sea and sky,

Welcomes his advent from on high,

Who did their groaning fabric build,

With pangs of expectation thrilled.

VERSE 3

And shall our hearts unpurified,

The coming of their King abide?

Strew all his path, and lodging meet,

Prepare a royal guest to greet.

VERSE 4

Jesus, our souls with health endow;

Our strength and consolation you;

Creatures of earth without your aid,

We languish like the flowers that fade.

VERSE 5

Stretch out your hand, we faint no more;

The fallen to their feet restore,

Show but your face, and wintry earth,

Shall bring her dallying flowers to birth.

VERSE 6

Jesus, our ransomer divine,

Let praise beyond all praise be yours;

Praise to the Father endlessly,

And his life-giving Spirit be

HIS BOUNTIFUL CARE

The earth with His sunshine is glad…

For bounty so royal and free…

For mercies unending and new…

Oh, help us to praise thee, dear Lord…

And serve thee in all that we do…

HOLY GOD WE PRAISE YOUR NAME

Holy God, we praise your name;

Lord of all, we bow before you!

All on earth your sceptre claim,

All in heaven above adore you,

Infinite your vast domain,

Everlasting is your reign!

VERSE 2

Hark! The loud celestial hymn,

Angel choirs above are raising!

Cherubim and Seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heavens with sweet accord,

Holy, holy, holy, Lord!

VERSE 3

Holy Father, Holy Son!

Holy Spirit, Three we name you,

While in essence only One,

Undivided God we ’claim you,

And adoring bend the knee,

While we own the mystery.

VERSE 4

Spare your people, Lord, we pray,

By a thousand snares surrounded;

Keep us without sin today;

Never let us be confounded,

Lo, I put my trust in you –

Never Lord, abandon me

HOW EXCELLENT

VERSE 1

How excellent, how excellent,

Is thy loving kindness,

Is thy loving kindness O God,

How excellent, how excellent,

Is your loving kindness,

Is your loving kindness O God.

Therefore the children of men,

Therefore the children of men,

Therefore the children of men put their trust,

Therefore the children of men, put their trust,

Therefore put their trust under the shadow

Of your wings.

They shall be abundantly satisfied,

With the fullness of your name,

And you shall make them drink

Of the river of your pleasure, .

And you shalt make them drink

Of the river of your pleasure,

Of your loving kindness,

They shall be abundantly satisfied,

They shall be abundantly satisfied,

They shall be abundantly satisfied,

With the fullness of your house,

And you shall make them drink,

Of the river of your pleasure.

Show your loving kindness unto them,

Your pleasures and you shall make them drink

Of the river of your pleasure,

That know you, unto them that know you

And your righteousness,

Your pleasures, and you shall make them drink

Of the river of your pleasure to the upright

In heart

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

“It is well, it is well, with my soul.”

CHORUS

It is well, it is well,

With my soul, with my soul,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

VERSE 2

Though Satan should buffet,

Though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control;

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

VERSE 3

My sin, O the bliss, of this glorious tho’t,

My sin, not in part but the whole

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more.

And Lord haste the day

When my faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

Yet the little ones may come to Thee

KEEP STEP WITH THE MASTER

And your cour…age still renew; …

He will lead you all the journey through.

The way He will show,

The light of His presence your path will illumine,

And make all the desert a garden of bloom.

VERSE 3

Keep step with the Master, nor halt by the way;

Whate’er He commands you, oh, haste to obey!

You’re sure to be right

LEAD, KINDLY LIGHT

VERSE 1

Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom,

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see

The distant scene; one step enough for me.

VERSE 2

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou

Shouldst lead me on;

I loved to choose and see my path; but now

Lead Thou me on.

I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,

Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

VERSE 3

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still

MAN IS LONELY BY BIRTH

VERSE 1

Man is lonely by birth,

Man is only a pilgrim on earth,

Born to be king, time is but a temporary thing,

Only on loan while on earth.

VERSE 2

Like the wind in the tree,

Man has been rather reckless and free,

Thrown far and wide, he longs to settle down

Beside the stream flowing through eternity.

VERSE 3

Like the grass on the lawn,

He will pass by the way and be gone,

A lesson to learn, we walk

But once there’s no return,

Time is always moving on.

VERSE 4

Man is longing for one,

For a song and a place in the sun,

For home up above where ev’ry day

Is lived in love.

For rest when the journey is done

MOST ANCIENT OF ALL MYSTERIES

VERSE 1

Most ancient of all mysteries,

Before thy throne we lie;

Have mercy now, most merciful,

Most holy Trinity.

VERSE 2

When heaven and earth were yet unmade,

When time was yet unknown,

Thou, in thy bliss and majesty,

Didst live and love alone.

VERSE 3

Thou were not born; there was no fount

From which thy Being flowed,

There is no end which thou can’tst reach:

But thou art simply God.

VERSE 4

How wonderful creation is,

The work that thou didst bless;

And oh, what then must thou be like,

Eternal loveliness!

VERSE 5

Most ancient of all mysteries,

Still at thy throne we lie;

Have mercy now, most merciful,

Most holy Trinity

MY GOD, ACCEPT MY HEART THIS DAY

VERSE 1
My God, accept my heart this day,
And make it wholly thine,
That I from thee no more may stray,
No more from thee decline.

VERSE 2
Before the Cross of him who died,
Behold I prostrate fall,
Let every sin be crucified,
And Christ be all in all.

VERSE 3
Anoint me with thy heavenly grace,
And seal me for thine own,
That I may see thy glorious face,
And worship at thy throne.

VERSE 4
Let every thought and work and word
To thee be ever given,
Then life shall be thy service, Lord,
And death the gate of heaven.

VERSE 5
All glory to the Father be,
All glory to the Son,
All glory to Holy Ghost, to thee,
While endless ages run

MY GOD, HOW WONDERFUL THOU ART

VERSE 1

My God, how wonderful thou art,

Thy majesty how bright,

How beautiful thy mercy-seat

In depths of burning light.

VERSE 2

How dread are thine eternal years,

O everlasting Lord,

By prostrate spirits day and night

Incessantly adored.

VERSE 3

How beautiful, how beautiful

The sight of thee must be,

Thine endless wisdom, boundless power,

And awful purity.

VERSE 4

Oh, how I fear thee, living God,

With deepest, tenderest fears,

And worship thee with trembling hope,

And penitential tears.

VERSE 5

Yet I may love thee too, O Lord,

Almighty as thou art,

For thou hast stooped to ask of me

The love of my poor heart.

VERSE 6

No earthly father loves like thee,

No mother e’er so mild,

Bears and forbears as thou hast done,

With me, thy sinful child.

VERSE 7

Father of Jesus, love’s reward,

What rapture will it be,

Prostrate before thy throne to lie,

And gaze and gaze on thee

MY SOUL IS LONGING FOR YOUR PEACE (PSALM 131)

CHORUS

My soul is longing for your peace,

Near to you, my God!

VERSE 1

Lord, you know that my heart is not proud,

And my eyes are not lifted from the earth.

VERSE 2

Lofty thoughts have never filled my mind,

Far beyond my sight all ambitious deeds.

VERSE 3

In your peace I have maintained my soul,

I have kept my heart in your quiet peace.

VERSE 4

As a child rests on his mother’s knee,

So I place my soul in your loving care.

VERSE 5

Israel, put all your hope in God,

Place your trust in him, now and evermore

MY TIMES ARE IN THY HAND

VERSE 1

My times are in Thy Hands,

My God, I wish them there;

My life, my friends, my soul I leave

Entirely to Thy care.

VERSE 2

My times are in Thy Hand,

Whatever they may be,

Pleasing or painful, dark or bright,

As best may seem to Thee.

VERSE 3

My times are in Thy Hand,

Why should I doubt or fear?

A Father’s Hand will never cause

His child a needless tear.

VERSE 4

My times are in Thy Hand,

Jesus the crucified;

The Hand my cruel sins hand pierced

Is now my guard and guide.

VERSE 5

My times are in Thy Hand,

I’ll always trust in Thee,

And after death at Thy right Hand

I shall for ever be

NOW THAT THE DAY-STAR GLIMMERS

VERSE 1

Now that the day-star glimmers bright,

We suppliantly pray

That he, the uncreated light,

May guide us on our way.

VERSE 2

No sinful word, nor deed of wrong,

Nor thoughts that idly rove;

But simple truth be on our tongue,

And in our hearts be love.

VERSE 3

And, while the hours in order flow,

O Christ, securely fence

Our gates, beleaguer’d by the foe: –

The gate of every sense.

VERSE 4

And grant that to thine honour, Lord,

Our daily toil may tend;

That we begin it at thy word,

And in thy blessing end.

VERSE 5

And, lest the flesh in its excess

Should loard it o’er the soul,

Let taming abstinence repress

The rebel, and control.

VERSE 6

To God the Father glory be,

And to his only Son,

And to the Spirit, One in Three,

While endless ages run

SAINT JOSEPH

VERSE 1

O blessed Saint Joseph

How great was thy worth,

The one chosen shadow of God up on earth

Called Father of Jesus ah, then wilt thou be,

Sweet Spouse of Our Lady! A father to me?

VERSE 2

For thou to the pilgrim art father and guide,

And Jesus and Mary felt safe by thy side;

Ah blessed Saint Joseph how safe should I be,

Sweet Spouse of Our Lady!

If thou were with me.

VERSE 3

When the treasures of God were unsheltered

On earth,

Safe keeping was found for them

Both in thy worth;

O Father of Jesus, be father to me,

Sweet Spouse of Our Lady, and I will love thee

O HAPPY DAY

VERSE 1

O happy day, that fixed my choice,

On Thee, my Saviour and my God!

Well may this glowing heart rejoice,

And tell its raptures all abroad.

CHORUS

Happy day! Happy day!

When Jesus washed my sins away!

He taught me how to watch and pray

And live rejoicing every day:

Happy day! Happy day!

When Jesus washed my sins away!

VERSE 2

’Tis done, the great transaction’s done

I am my Lord’s and He is mine;

He drew me, and I followed on,

Charmed to confess the voice Divine.

VERSE 3

Now rest, my long-divided heart,

Fixed on this blissful centre, rest;

Nor ever from thy Lord depart,

With Him of every good possessed.

VERSE 4

High Heaven, that heard the solemn vow

That vow renewed shall daily hear,

Till in life’s latest hour I bow,

And bless in death a bond so dear

O KING OF KINGS

VERSE 1

O King of Kings,

In splendour of glory throned on high,

Do thou, our strong defender,

Thy Church still magnify.

CHORUS

Our Holy Father shielding,

His enemies o ‘erthrow;

May Peter’s faith unyielding,

The path to Heaven foreshew.

VERSE 2

That citadel surrounding,

The angry foreman raves;

Upon that rock resounding,

Dash high the sullen waves.

VERSE 3

Yet Lord, in siege laborious,

Though hell itself should rage,

Thou wondrous, thou victorious,

Art known from age to age.

VERSE 4

We trust thy conquering power,

Now and in time to be,

The gift of peace to shower,

On those who trust in Thee.

VERSE 5

Still, still with light supernal,

Those battlement shall gleam,

And Peter’s rock, eternal,

Confront the restless stream

O PERFECT LOVE

VERSE 1

O perfect Love, all human thoughts

Transcending,

Lowly we kneel in prayer before thy throne,

That theirs may be the love

Which knows no ending,

Whom thou for evermore dost join in one.

VERSE 2

O Perfect Life, be thou their full assurance,

Of tender charity and steadfast faith,

Of patient hope, and quiet, brave endurance,

With child-like trust that fears

Nor pain nor death.

VERSE 3

Grant them joy which brightens

Earthly sorrow,

Grant them the peace which claims

All earthly strife;

And to life’s day the glorious unknown morrow

That dawns upon eternal love and life

SAINT PATRICK

CHORUS

Great and glorious Saint Patrick,

Pray for your dear children,

Great and glorious Saint Patrick,

Hearken to the prayers of your children.

VERSE 1

Hibernia’s champion saint all hail,

With fadeless glory crowned,

The offspring of your ardent zeal,

This day your praise shall sound.

VERSE 2

Borne on the wings of charity,

To Erin’s coast you flew,

Bade Satan from her valleys flee,

And his dark shrines o’erthrew.

VERSE 3

Wandering thro’ error’s gloomy night,

Our sires did lose their way,

You cheer’d their hearts with heav’nly light,

With truth’s consoling ray.

VERSE 4

Oh what a harvest crown your toil,

The earth long curs’d was blessed,

Each lovely virtue graced its soil,

The sinners’ heart find rest

PRAISE WE OUR GOD WITH JOY

VERSE 1

Praise we our God with joy,

And gladness never ending,

Angels and saints with us,

Their grateful voices blending,

He is our Father dear,

O’er filled with parent’s love,

Mercies unsought, unknown,

He showers from above.

VERSE 2

He is our Shepherd true,

With watchful care unsleeping

On us, his erring sheep,

An eye of pity keeping;

He with a mighty arm

The bonds of sin doth break,

And to our burden’d hearts

In words of peace doth speak.

VERSE 3

Grace in copious stream

From that pure fount are welling,

Where, in our heart of hearts,

Our God hath set his dwelling,

His word our lantern is,

His peace our comfort still,

His sweetness all our rest,

Our law, our life, his will

PRECIOUS PROMISE

VERSE 1

Precious promise God hath given

To the weary passer-by,

On the way from earth to heaven,

“I will guide thee with Mine eye.”

CHORUS

I will guide thee, I will guide thee,

I will guide thee with Mine eye;

On the way from earth to heaven,

I will guide thee with Mine eye.

VERSE 2

When temptations almost win thee,

And thy trusted watchers fly,

Let this promise ring within thee:

“I will guide thee with Mine eye.”

VERSE 3

When thy secret hopes have perished

In the grave of years gone by,

Let this promise still be cherished.

“I will guide thee with Mine eye.”

VERSE 4

When the shades of life are falling,

And the hour has come to die,

Hear thy trusty Leader calling:

“I will guide thee with Mine eye.”

O GOD OF EARTH AND ALTAR

VERSE 1

Bow down and hear our cry,

Our earthly rulers falter,

Our people drift and die,

The walls of gold entomb us,

The swords of scorn divide,

Take not thy thunder from us,

But take away our pride.

VERSE 2

From all that terror teaches,

From lies of tongue and pen,

From all the easy speeches

That comfort cruel men,

From sale and profanation

Of honour and the sword,

From sleep and from damnation,

Deliver us, good Lord!

VERSE 3

Tie in a living tether

The prince and priest and thrall,

Bind all our lives together,

Smite us and save us all;

In ire and exultation

Aflame with faith, and free,

Lift up a living nation,

A single sword to thee

OUR FATHER

VERSE 1

Our Father, who art in Heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

VERSE 2

As in heaven, so on the earth,

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Give us this day our daily bread,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

VERSE 3

And forgive us, all our trespasses,

Hallowed be Thy Name;

As we forgive those who trespass against us,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

VERSE 4

And lead us not into temptation,

Hallowed be Thy Name;

But deliver us from all that is evil,

Hallowed be Thy Name

TEN LEPERS

CHORUS

Ten unclean and nowhere to go,

Ten men cleansed as clean as snow,

One returned to give God thanks,

But nine went away.

VERSE 1

Ten men, lepers in a Hebrew town,

Ten crying: “Lord, won’t you please come down”

No hope near, till one fine day,

Jesus of Nazareth passed that way.

VERSE 2

“Lord make me clean,” was their single cry,

“See, how the whole world passed us by,

No man’s home will take us in!”

Then Christ bent to touch their skin.

VERSE 3

Like a tree when its buds come true,

Or a patch of spring that is fresh and new,

Christ restored the ones defiled,

Gave them the flesh of a new-born child.

VERSE 4

God gives gifts to us ev’ry day,

Favours His people in ev’ry way;

Hope restored and pain relieved, —

Do you ever give thanks for a gift received?

THE FUTURE LIES BEFORE ME

VERSE 1

Oh! I often sit and ponder,

When the sun is sinking low,

Where shall yonder future find me

Does but God in Heaven know,

Shall I be among the living,

Shall I mingle with the free,

Wheresoe’er my path be leading,

Saviour, keep my heart with Thee.

CHORUS

Oh! The future lies before me,

And I know not where I’ll be,

But where’er my path be leading,

Saviour, keep my heart with Thee.

VERSE 2

Shall I be at work with Jesus,

Whilst He Leads me by the hand,

And to those around be saying,

Come and join this happy band.

Come for all things now are ready

Come His faithful followers be,

Oh where’er my path be leading,

Saviour, keep my heart with Thee.

VERSE 3

But perhaps my work for Jesus,

Soon in future may be done,

All my earthly trials ended,

And my crown in heaven won,

Then forever with the ransom’d

Thro’ eternity l’d be

Chanting hymns to Him who bought me,

With His Blood shed on the Tree

THE WEDDING BANQUET

CHORUS

I cannot come,

I cannot come to the banquet,

Don ‘t trouble me now,

I have married a wife,

I have bought me a cow,

I have fields and commitments,

That cost a pretty sum,

Pray, hold me excused, I cannot come.

VERSE 1

A certain man held a feast,

On his fine estate in town,

He laid a festive table and

Wore a wedding gown,

He sent in invitations,

To his neighbours far and wide,

But when the meal was ready,

Each of them replied:

I cannot come.

VERSE 2

The master rose up in anger,

Called his servants by name, said:

“Go into the town, fetch the blind and the lame,

Fetch the peasant and the pauper,

For this I have willed,

My banquet must be crowded,

And my table must be filled.”

I cannot come.

VERSE 3

When all the poor had assembled,

There was still, room to spare,

So the master demanded:

“Go search everywhere,

To the highways and byways

And force them to come in,

My table must be filled

Before the banquet can begin.”

I cannot come.

VERSE 4

Now God has written a lesson

For the rest of mankind,

If we’re slow in responding,

He may leave us behind,

He’s preparing a banquet

For that great and glorious day,

Be certain not to say:

I cannot come.

WE ARE ONE IN JESUS

VERSE 1

We are one in Jesus, all of us are one,

We are one in Jesus, all of us are one,

We are one, we are one,

Jesus Christ and we are one,

We are one, we are one,

Jesus Christ and we are one.

VERSE 2

We are one in Jesus, all of us are one,

All of us are brothers, brothers of our Lord,

All of us are brothers, brothers of our Lord,

We are one, we are one,

Brothers of our risen Lord,

We are one,  we are on in the Spirit of our Lord,

All of us are brothers, brothers of our Lord.

VERSE 3

Jesus is our brother, Christ and we are one,

Jesus is our brother, Christ and we are one,

One in mind, one in heart,

In the Spirit from on high,

With our brother in our midst,

Never more to die,

Jesus is our brother, Christ and we are one,

We are one in Jesus, all of us are one,

All of us are one, all of us are one

YET I BELIEVE

CHORUS

I believe God lay sleeping in the tomb,

Waiting until the day should break.

I believe my Father has care of me

And someday, He’ll say, “My child awake.”

VERSE 1

I believe man was born to die,

Over and over again,

I believe that man was meant to cry,

“Amen, my Lord, Amen.”

VERSE 2

I believe that the stars are mine,

Love lifts the stars from the night,

I believe there’s always sun to shine,

Though sometimes it’s hidden from sight.

VERSE 3

I believe man must go alone,

Tossed like a wave on the sea,

Yet I believe that man must have a home,

God holds a mansion for me.

VERSE 4

I believe man was born for joy,

Some men must find it in pain,

Some rivers run through caves

Beneath the ground,

Sometimes there’s sun in the rain

ZACCHEUS

CHORUS

There was a man in Jerico called Zaccheus,

There was a man in Jerico called Zaccheus,

Now the Hebrews, they were tall,

But Zaccheus, he was small,

Yet the Lord loved Zaccheus,

Better than them all.

VERSE 1

The Lord went walking one day

Through Jerico town,

And the people began to gather

From miles around,

But Zaccheus, he couldn’t see,

So he climbed a sycamore tree,

And the Lord looked up and said:

“Zaccheus, come down.”

VERSE 2

The Lord said: “Zaccheus,

I am dining with you today,

Zaccheus, I come to your house,

Come, lead the way.”

Then Zaccheus, he gave a cheer,

But the people began to sneer,

“This man is a sinner,

Does the Lord seek lodging here?”

VERSE 3

Now Zaccheus was small of stature,

But he could show,

That a man who is stout of heart

Can grow and grow:

“If I have cheated young and old,

I restore the goods fourfold.”

And salvation came that day

To his whole household
